It’s February, the shortest month of the year, the only month with fewer than 30 days. It’s also the only one whose days vary: During a
leap year, there are 29 days rather than the usual 28.
February gives us
Black History Month, Groundhog Day (Feb. 2), Abraham Lincoln’s birthday (Feb. 12), Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14) and Presidents’ Day (Feb. 17). Mardi Gras (Feb. 25) is the traditional “
fat Tuesday,” which marks the day before the commencement of Lent.
A lot of history has happened during this most-abbreviated month.
Mary Queen of Scots
lost her head (1587). Napoleon escaped the island of Elba (1815). Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto (1930). Nelson Mandela was freed from his South African prison (1990). Scientists cloned
Dolly the Sheep
(1997). Tragically, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated upon re-entry, killing all onboard (2003).
February has been a busy month for the pop culture, too.
Tchaikovsky's
ballet “Swan Lake” premiered in Moscow (1877). Walt Disney released “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (1938). Elvis Presley made his first appearance on the pop charts with “Heartbreak Hotel” (1956). The Beatles made their debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show” (1964). Smokey Robinson and the Miracles made their first TV appearance, singing “
Shop Around” on American Bandstand (1960). Long-running comedy M*A*S*H* ended with an episode that 77 percent of the viewing audience watched (1983).
Speaking of “pop” culture, here’s something that happened in February circa 1620 that we can all appreciate: A Native American named
Quadequina introduced popcorn
to the English colonists. He certainly deserves a hallowed place in the popcorn hall of fame beside the esteemed Orville Redenbacher.
February is a month that, despite its brevity, seems long. That’s probably because it’s sandwiched between two highly anticipated periods: the holiday season and springtime. Here in Florida, we enjoy it as a month of pleasant temperatures. Elsewhere in the United States, though, it can be
a gloomy trudge through gray-skied days
and inclement weather. In fact, the great blizzard of 1978, one of the worst on record, hammered parts of our country in February.
At any rate, Z Corp would like to wish you a happy second month of the new year -- wherever you live. Make it a good one. You have only 28 days.
